Meesterlijke Post-Arabische-Lente Pop uit Libanon
Na de Arabische Lente waait er een nieuwe wind in de regio. Er wordt hardop gedroomd. In Libanon steken vijf vrienden de koppen bij mekaar en Mashrou Leila is een feit. Ze worden dé stem van een nieuwe generatie. Hun muziek is poppy én traditioneel, universeel én Arabisch, zacht en confronterend. Ze zingen over individuele vrijheid, zelf kunnen kiezen. En dat slaat in als een bom in landen waar religie en overheid alles bepaalden. De leadzanger is openlijk gay, een behoorlijk statement. Hun concerten, worden echte events, waar jongeren mekaar publiekelijk durven kussen, ze massaal uit de bol gaan, en inspiratie opdoen voor hun eigen weg. Hun zanger is de Arabische reïncarnatie van Freddie Mercury en de groep heeft een uitstraling die de piramides in Egypte overtreft. De eerste Arabische groep ooit op de cover van Rolling Stone! Oriental rhythms fuse with rock, pop and electro. They sing about love, sex, politics. They are activists on individual choice and intellectual freedom. Frontman Hamed Sinno is openly gay, quite a statement in the region.
